Week of March 28th

March 29, 2016

HDSMS Main

I sincerely hope everyone had an amazing Spring Break. It is always such a good time of year to spend time with family and friends, get those jobs around the house finally done, get away for some relaxation and re-energize for the final stretch of the year. I look forward to hearing about how everyone spent the past two and a half weeks. We have lots going on from now until June and it starts with a short but busy week. Below is what’s going on This Week at HDSMS: March 28th. Please be sure to read through it carefully.

Information To Share:

Term 3 Explorations/Electives: Just a reminder that Wednesday is the first day of term three explorations/electives. Grade 8s are to attend the elective currently in MyEdBC. There will be no switching this week, so please be sure you take accurate attendance in block 7. Any switches that need to occur can happen through Shawn and Iha starting next Monday.

Dress Code Reminder: The weather is supposed to get very nice this week so it’s a good time to remind students of the expectations regarding dress code. You can find them (along with the rest of our student expectations by clicking here.

EdCamp35: This year, HD Stafford Middle will be hosting the annual EdCamp35 on Saturday April 16th. This free event brings together passionate educators for an “un-conference” where the focus is on conversation, connection and learning in things related to education. And one of the most powerful participants in the previous events has been the voice of students and parents. For more information  and to register (so you get free lunch) please head to www.edcamp35.com

Music At Lunch: Just a reminder that we have both choir and band happening during lunch time at HDSMS. Click here for a short blurb from Patti Thorpe.

Notice of Construction: Starting Monday March 7, 2016, Sandpiper contracting will begin construction of upgrades to the water and sewer mains on 203 Street between Grade Crescent and 49 A Avenue. Construction will take approximately 10 weeks, ending early May 2016. Construction will take place between Monday to Friday from 7am and 5pm. Residents will receive advanced notification of any works scheduled outside these hours.Traffic will be restricted during construction to single lane alternating. The contractor will maintain single lane in each direction during peak periods (such as school pick up/drop off times).  Parking will be restricted in the area while the contractor is working.

Jesse Miller Rescheduled: We are excited to have Jesse Miller come to speak with our students on April 21st about social media and safety. He will also be doing a parent night that same evening from 6:30 – 8:00. Below is a write up of the presentation:

Social Media, Connected Children, Parenting the Mobile Device Child:

An interactive and visual presentation helps parents understand where the social media and tech concerns are in our connected community. This is a must-see presentation for parents who would like to proactively examine the challenges of social media, reveal the realities behind the concerns around social media, and prompt dialogue that fits your home values. This presentation will provide parents with the tools needed to better equip themselves for parenting in the social media generation, extend the dialogue to reflect technology influences in your home, and address the current trends in social media use within British Columbia.

Jesse Miller is a respected national speaker on the topics of social media awareness, social networking behaviour, and online content evaluation. He has been presenting and consulting with schools, government organizations, and public safety agencies since 2007. His presentations have reached thousands of participants across Canada and his presentation addresses issues ranging from Cyberbullying, Digital Citizenship, and Digital Curriculum development. Jesse is renowned for proactively examining the challenges of social media and has spoken at hundreds of schools across Canada.
