Stafford Scoop Sept. 19, 2021

September 19, 2021

Week of Sept 19, 2021

We sure hit the ground running in week two!  It was wonderful to see students outside, smiling, laughing, playing with their friends and enjoying a safe return to Middle School.  Walking and talking with students who are so excited ( and sometimes confused!) to use their lockers for the first time makes us smile.  It is so wonderful to see staff connecting with students, learning their stories, and sometimes helping them cope the expectations of middle school.   These interactions establish trust and clarity and will set them up for a great year ahead.  This week we have grade assemblies were we will go over these expectations and all the amazing opportunities (clubs, sports, music, drama, etc.) that await them here at HDSMS!

Here’s the SCOOP…

PICTURES FROM THE LAST WEEK:

We’re excited to show off our new gym floor and our new logos to our Skyhawks staff and students – here is a picture of Centaur Painter Darrell who spent much of his summer refinishing and re-painting our floor – and it looks fantastic!  Though we won’t be able to play on it until Sept. 27 – it will be worth the wait!

Ms. Towle was presented with the Top Grade 8 Band student that she won WHEN SHE WAS IN GRADE 8 at HD Stafford Secondary!  Thanks to Mr. Wright for making the presentation!  Her students loved it!

Explorations Classes are in full swing – Mr. Mitchell is demonstrating the safe way to operate the drill press for our newest Skyhawks!

A tale of two furnitures?!  Above we see Ms. Paul’s class showing off their classroom full of new flexible furniture whereas beside them was Mr. Bell and Ms. Cowling’s classes helping to set up for a meeting after school – Thanks Skyhawks!

The Learning Commons was hopping this week with oreintation sessions and kids being shown just how many different ways they can access their favourite books! Thanks Ms. Jones & Ms. Markle!

NEW TRANSIT PROGRAM

Starting Wednesday, September 1, children 12 and under will be able to ride TransLink services free of charge as part of a new provincial program. The program will make transit more affordable for families and help to encourage children to become lifelong transit riders.

page6image1813024

Here’s what you need to know about children 12 and under riding our different services:

Children 12 and under will be able to ride buses free of charge without requiring a transit pass, identification or an accompanying fare paying customer.

Riding the bus
Children 12 and under will be able to ride on SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express free of charge only if accompanied by a fare paying customer. A fare paying customer can accompany up to a maximum of four children through the fare gates.

Children 12 and under will continue to be able to access the gated system by themselves with the purchase of a fare to tap through fare gates.

Riding SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express
Children 12 and under who are registered HandyDART customers or children who are accompanying a registered HandyDART customer will be able to travel for free on HandyDART without requiring a fare product or identification.

Riding HandyDART
While travel for children 12 and under will be free, parents and guardians are responsible for educating and making decisions about the safety and care of their children whenever travelling on transit. This includes when children are travelling unaccompanied where permitted and determining if their children can or should take transit independently.

Please visit translink.ca/kidsridefree for more information about the program. For resources and youth travel initiatives, please visit the TravelSmart page under the “TravelSmart for Schools” section.

STUDENTS and MASKS

Please ensure that your children have their masks each day.

  • Students MUST always have their masks on – in the classroom, including their workstation (even if physically distanced), working on bulletin boards, going to washroom, filling their water bottles up, going outside, in PE class inside, etc.
  • Masks do not need to be worn when students are eating/drinking, or participating in high intensity activities outdoors (limited physical contact).
  • In band, the mask can only come off when they are playing their instrument (brass/woodwind).

LOVING LITERACY:

What is Reader Identity?

“Reader identity refers to how capable individuals believe they are in comprehending texts, value they place on reading and their understanding of what it means to be a particular type of reader. (Hall, 2012, p. 369)

Let’s talk to our kids about their reader identity and how to build confidence in that area. Here are some resources to get that conversation started. Pernille Ripp is a great resource to get you fired up about teaching reading – She has a survey to do with the kids around their reading identity, constructive ways to set up reading goals for each student, and some great recommendations for books that her middle schoolers have loved.

MS. LOREE’S COUNSELLING CONNECTION:
.

Grounding is a mindfulness technique that encourages students to focus on the present.  Grounding exercises often help to calm students when they become caught up in anxious or negative thoughts and big emotions, but they can also help with transitioning from one activity to another.  At home, the morning is often chaotic for many of our students.  Taking a moment when they first arrive to do grounding exercises may lead to a smoother start to the school day.
