Hawk Squawk: June 10th

June 10, 2016

What an awesome week. Our Hawk Squawk for this week includes some awesome celebrations including one of the most inspirational and powerful moments in many of our staff’s careers. Please be sure to share with your family and friends.

IMG_8832Inaugural LSS Grad Walk: For many of our students, realizing their graduation from high school can seem pretty far fetched. Not that they won’t graduate, but visualizing that experience is not in their minds at the middle school level let alone in Kindergarten. So this past week, the LSS family of schools connected the K-12 learning experience in our first ever Grad walk. LSS grads donned their caps and gowns and came back to IMG_8812HD Stafford Middle School to celebrate their accomplishment by parading through our halls to cheers and loud music. They then went to each of the middle schools they began their schooling career at. Staff and students were honoured and humbled to share in this momentous occasion while being able to see what lays ahead of them. It was truly a special moment for our entire Langley City community! IMG_5931ELL Pen Pals Unite: Over the course of this school year, the ELL students here at HD Stafford Middle School have been putting their learning of the English language to practical use by corresponding with a class of ELL students at Langley Secondary. This past week, the two classes IMG_5922connected for the first time, getting to meet each other face to face! It is great when we see connected, meaningful learning happen for all of our students, especially those just learning the language. And to share some time together made it even more powerful. Thank you to Mrs Jonasson for organizing this awesome learning opportunity.

Thank You PAC: With the year winding down, so too is the work of our Parent Advisory Council.ThankYou2 So we wanted to take this opportunity to give a huge thank you to all the amazing parents who have worked so tirelessly this year for our students. They work behind the scenes raising money and supporting learning! We are so grateful for them. And a special thank you to our out-going PAC President, Shannon Duralia! You have been amazing! This past week Jennifer Bradford was elected as the new PAC President and we all look forward to working with her next year and beyond.

IMG_8842HDSMS Student Give Back: Clearly the theme of this week is community connection. James Hill Elementary had their annual Sports Day and almost 50 of our student volunteered to go and help out. And not only that, they got their a little early and spent some time reading with the IMG_8841students in their classrooms. We are so proud of the connection our student maintain with their feeder schools while they are at HD Stafford Middle School. It is one of those things that make for a very strong community.

IMG_8844The Butterfly Effect In Access Program: We love the amazing learning that happens for all our students, including those in our low incident Access program. Over the past few weeks they have been learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. In this integrated unitIMG_8846 they have combined Science, Art and Writing to empower their learning. We love the display on the bulletin board in the hallway!
