Hawk Squawk: February 17th

February 17, 2017

Was nice to get an almost full week under our belt. Definitely gave everyone a chance to return to routine. The learning and celebrating were in full force at HD Stafford Middle as we approach the end of the second term. Here’s the Hawk Squawk: February 17th. Please be sure to share with your family and friends.

ACCESS Spreads The Love On Valentines Day: We are so proud of the relationship we continue to cultivate with the community around us. And in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, our students in the ACCESS program decided to take to the streets to show our surrounding neighbours just how much we appreciate them. They created cards and hand delivered them. It was a great interaction and a wonderful example of how important it is to have a strong community to ensure student success.

Home Is Where The Heart Is…And The Math: The students in Mrs Coleman’s class had the opportunity to combine creativity and numeracy in their Math class. They were given the task of creating floor plans for their own dream homes. They were very creative but the catch was, they had to measure the area and perimeter of the rooms and furniture. Next they will look at buying the furniture to fit and working within a budget. So awesome when they can learn great life skills while having some fun.

Grade 6s Have Some Fun With Their WEB Leaders: We have been so excited about the progress we have made getting our WEB program off the ground this year. We have been working on cultivating leadership in our grade 8 WEB leaders while mentoring our grade 6s. We know we have a ways to go and are thrilled about that opportunity. This past week, our WEB leaders re-connected with their grade 6 mentees by playing some interactive games in the gym, including a massive 200 person game of tag. It is crucial that we continue to build a strong community throughout our grades as we move forward.

Girl Empowerment In Passion To Lead: This past week, our Passion To Lead group participated in a friendship and self-esteem activity to highlight the positive relationships being built. Each girl got a turn to sit on the stool in front of the white board while her friends wrote positive things about her in response to the prompt “This Girl…” There was no peeking allowed, so the girls were laughing and excited to read the things their friends were writing. I drew a picture around the girl to add some fun. I took a photo which I will give to each of the girls to put in their lockers as a poster as a self-esteem booster. I put the photos in a photo program to switch to Black and white and added a few little elements.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream A Huge Success: This week was our run of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was an overwhelming success! With great audiences each night and matinee, our students showed off their months of hard work with exceptional shows. They were strong on their lines, amazing in their acting and completely brought the house down. We are so proud! A HUGE thank you to Ms McArthur for her countless hours of work and support in getting the students ready. Also thanks to Mr. Sandquist for preparing our set. We are already excited to see what next year brings.
