Happy Friday! As you begin your weekend, staff are currently collaborating to make learning even more powerful for your students. To help you kick off the long weekend on the right foot (reminder Monday is a Curriculum Implementation Day) here is the Hawk Squawk: April 15th.
Historic Win For Girls Rugby: This year, HD Stafford Middle School was extremely excited to have their first ever girls rugby team. Following the rich tradition on the boys side, the girls took to the field a few weeks ago not knowing any of the rules or how to play. Their growth has been tremendous due in large part to their hard work and willingness to learn. This past week they earned their first ever victory, defeating Chief Dan Middle School. The girls should be very proud of their accomplishment! Their coaches and the entire community certainly are.
A Commercial Break For The Leadership Class: This past week, our grade 8s were using green screens in Leadership to film commercials. Students have become young entrepreneurs who have invented a new product that they are marketing. Some products are portable garburators, non-rippable paper for students, scented sneakers etc. There task was to create a print ad, radio commercial and tv commercial, all of which attract their target market group. A powerful, authentic way to learn about how companies market to them as young consumers as well as fuel their entrepreneurial spirit.
Quilting With Our Sixes: One of the best parts of being at a middle school is all the different opportunities our students get. Mrs Sanderson has been working with our grade sixes to create a collaborative quilt. The students in Ms Saumier’s class stamped and did this really neat shaving cream print making. Four fabulous quilts were made with all the prints and one hangs in the glass foyer case. Please drop by and have a look if you are the office way. The quilts will all be displayed at the Quilt Show at George Preston Centre on May 6th and 7th. What an awesome, authentic learning experience for our Skyhawks.
Newest Skyhawks Begin Transition To HD Stafford Middle: This past week was the official kick off of transition activities for our feeder schools at the grade 5s get ready to officially become Skyhawks. There was a very well attended parent info night where parents were able to get a sense of what middle school will be like for their child. Then Mr Davids and Mr Kemp went to visit the grade 5s to share the awesomeness that is HD Stafford Middle and answer questions. The next few weeks are full of even more activities including some visits to our school. Looking forward to them starting in September.
Find Your Fit Activity A Hit: Our grade 8s were able to attend a wonderful trades exhibition where they once again were able to participate in some hands on activities related to a variety of career options. This free event saw our student check out jobs like health services, electronics and a wide variety of others. It is great that we are already giving our students exposure to different talent and passion areas they may have.
