Welcome back!! With a new school year comes our first Hawk Squawk of the school year! Even after just 3 1/2 days, we already have lots to celebrate! So without further adieu, here is the Hawk Squawk: September 8th. As always, please be sure to share with your family and friends.
WEB Leaders Welcome Newest Skyhawks: The first day of school was reserved only for our newest Skyhawks. And to make sure they felt welcome, our WEB leaders came in during the last week of summer for their training sessions. Our grade 6s started with a great interactive assembly in our gym and then joined their WEB leaders in smaller groups to learn their way around the school, get to know each other and learn how to be successful at middle school. A huge thanks to our WEB leaders and teacher coordinators, Ms Chapman, Ms Cooper and Ms McArthur.
Collaborative Balloon Challenge: Many of our teachers spent time this first week having our students engaging in learning activities where students go to know each other through collaborative challenges. In Ms Ashcroft’s class, students were given the task of creating the largest free standing structure using balloons. It was amazing to see the students communicating, problem solving and ultimately working together on the challenge. And of course, tons of smiles along the way.
Freestyle Drawing: Ms Welsh got her class interacting right away through a great visual art activity! Students had to set themselves up in a still pose while their partner was given the challenge of drawing them. The catch was, the person doing the drawing could not lift their pencil off the paper. They did a portrait in one continuous line! The end results were awesome! And the students had a blast doing it.
Staff Bonding And Learning: It was not just the students returning to school after a great summer. Our staff are so excited to be back at HD Stafford with many new amazing educators joining us this year. After welcoming students, our staff met to share and discuss the big goals they want to work on this year. They also took some time to engage in collaborative games as they learned more about each other and got some ideas for their own classrooms. We are very fortunate to have such a passionate, hard-working, talented staff in Skyhawk Nation!
Explorations Begin: One of the best aspects of a middle school is the opportunity to take Explorations! And this week, all our students began their first rotation through either Home Arts, Tech Arts, Fine Arts or our newest Explo, Outdoor Aboriginal Education. We are so lucky to have amazing teachers in each of these areas. It will be great to share with our community the amazing hands on learning that goes on in these classes as students get the chance to explore their passions.
