Hawk Squawk: September 22nd

September 22, 2017

What an awesome week! The culture around the school has been so positive with staff and students alike. IT has been a truly great first few weeks of school. Here is the Hawk Squawk: September 22nd…please be sure to share with your family and friends.

Welcome Back Community BBQ: Last Wednesday we held our annual Welcome Back Community BBQ and “community” was definitely the theme of the night. The turn out was amazing as parents and kids connected with their teachers and learning support staff while enjoying a hot dog, chips and a drink. One of our action plan goals is building a positive culture for our students at HD Stafford Middle School and that night was a great example of that. A huge thanks to our incredible PAC who cooked and cleaned for everyone! Already excited about next year’s.

House Spirit Day: Today was our first Spirit event of the year, House Spirit Day. We are excited about our revamped House Team structure this year and on Friday students and staff showed their house pride by dressing in their team colours. It was so great to see so many kids and adults get in the spirit. The competition was friendly and the house pride was fierce. Looking forward to seeing how this unfolds this year.

Cross Country Off And Running: One of the great aspects of middle school is the opportunity to participate in sports and clubs. And one of the first that kicks off the year is Cross Country. We were so proud of all our Skyhawks runners who headed to the Aldergrove Park Bowl to compete against other runners throughout the district. Our students placed very well, including a second place finish by Madison Jones in her category. We are excited to see how many of our athletes can qualify for the Championship Race on October 10th. A huge thanks to Mrs Smith for volunteering to coach.

Manipulating Math In Grade 7 Gold House: Over the past couple years, our school has had a learning goal based on numeracy. Understanding numbers and the relationships between them are critical to success in Math for students. In Ms Ashcroft and Ms Passaglia’s class, students had the opportunity to use manipulatives to help them understand the patterns involved in subtraction. They were able to visualize how to borrow when using 4 digit numbers. So great to see powerful learning happening in our classes.

French Dance And Numbers: When learning another language, it is always helpful to have little ways to help you remember. And of course, if you can get your whole body involved, you’re even more likely to learn! In Mr. Wood’s class students got up and did a little dancing while learning their French numbers. As you can see by this video here, kids had a blast and were definitely getting more solid in the French knowledge.
