Well look at that … it’s already Friday! Time for another edition of the Hawk Squawk! So much to celebrate from this past week. Enjoy!
Fall Festival At HDSMS: It was great to have our first ever Fall Festival here at HD Stafford Middle School on Friday night. This great event brought together our entire community to celebrate Halloween and the Autumn season. There were great carnival games, prizes and of course, our infamous HDSMS Haunted House. It was yet another example of the power of community when we all come together. Huge thanks to Mr. Hendy, Mr. Mitchell and all the volunteers who made this night a success.
Synonym Tree: One of our learning goals this year is around literacy. And in Ms Miller’s grade 7 classes the students were learning how to improve their writing by creating a synonym tree. Students looked at some of the commonly used words in their writing and then created a “leaf” with different, more powerful words they could use instead. They then put these together on a tree that can be displayed in the classroom to enhance everyone’s writing. Learning that will impact learning all year long.
Drop Everything And Read: Further to our literacy goal, the entire HDSMS community took 20 minutes on Monday to Drop Everything And Read. Staff and students alike embraced the joy of reading, choosing a variety of text (novels, magazines, short stories, etc) to enjoy in the middle of the day. Was great to just lose ourselves in the beauty of words. Thank you to Mrs Zawaduk for organizing this event.
Volleyball Season Hits Playoff Time: After a very successful regular season, our grade 8 boys and girls volleyball teams hit the court for the playoffs. Our Boys hosted Langley Fundamental. It was an epic match with each team trading games and forcing a 5th and deciding show down. The boys played exceptional and lost narrowly 16-14.The girls also hosted, playing a tough team from Credo Christian. Again, the first four games went back and forth creating a sudden death game 5. The girls played awesome, losing by 2 points, 15 – 13. Huge thanks to Mr. Brandolini and Mr Horrocks for coaching and congratulations to all our athletes.
Access Visits Dave’s Orchard: As we all get into the fall season, our amazing students in the Access Program headed out on Friday to Dave’s Orchard. This Langley tradition gave our students the opportunity to enjoy the “farm life” while getting to pick pumpkins, gourds and other squashes. The students had so much fun exploring and definitely built memories of a lifetime. Thank you to Dave’s Orchard for the invitation!
