Hawk Squawk: May 6th

May 6, 2016

Hope everyone is having a great Friday! Has been an amazing week at HD Stafford Middle, capped off with a powerful day of learning for our staff. Here is our Hawk Squawk: May 6th. Please be sure to share with your family and friends.

IMG_20160505_102659Pi In The Sky: The grade 8s in Mr Jung’s class has an amazing opportunity this past week to get down and dirty using Raspberry Pi to learn how to code. They went to Trinity Western University and fully immersed themselvesIMG_20160505_133318 in the power of coding to create movement of a robotic. Many believe coding is the language of the future when it comes to career opportunities so it is awesome that our students got a chance to be exposed to it while at HD Stafford Middle School.

IMG_8344Feeder School Frenzy: This past week we welcomed our soon-to-be Skyhawks to HD Stafford Middle to help them get acquainted with their new school. They came in smaller groups to watch two amazing presentations from our IFA students (an ancient Egypt Dance and a drama piece based on The Paper Bag Princess). They then rotated through three stations … locker challenge, minute to win it games and a scavengerIMG_8351 hunt. They had a blast while getting themselves comfortable in the place they will spend the next three years. Huge thanks to Mrs Lacroix and our Leadership students for organizing these awesome days for our students. Looking forward to seeing Douglas Park and Uplands on Monday.

IMG_8368Take Him To The Greek: The students in Mr Main’s grade 7 Humanities class have been learning about Ancient Greece. They are showcasing their learning by writing, producing and directing short movies to share with their class. It is great to see when creativity collides with new IMG_8369found knowledge to create powerful pieces of art while demonstrating learning. We are looking forward to seeing the final products.

As a recent graduate of the Nursing Program at Douglas College she came in and spoke with the students about what drugs are, why they can be dangerous and how to protect themselves from some of the pitfalls. We are lucky to have so much expertise in our immediate community with such a13177643_10210217628505395_892794737456234329_n willingness to share. Huge thanks to Mrs Kemp from coming in. We hope it won’t be the last time.

IMG_8391A-Mazing Staff Professional Development: While students enjoyed a long weekend the staff were busy collaborating at HD Stafford Middle School. In the morning, they were challenged to get through a secret maze as an entire group without talking. This challenge led to many powerful conversations specifically focused on intentionally setting up our Skyhawks for success at school and beyond. It was great to have powerful learning for the adults with the betterment of students as the end goal. We are looking forward to IMG_8390building on our work today as we plan for next year and helping out students soar even higher.
