Hawk Squawk: December 8th

December 8, 2017

It has been a chilly week, but the learning around HD Stafford Middle has been heating up. We’ve had some great activities going on around the school so please join us as we celebrate in our Hawk Squawk: December 9th. Please feel free to share with your family and friends.

HDSMS Robotics Team Competes In Surrey: Last weekend, our Robotic Team took the skills they have been working on over the past few weeks and put them to the test in a regional competition in Surrey. They are given time to build a Lego robot that needs to be programmed to overcome different obstacles. Our team finished 11th and even won a special Strategy and Innovation Award! Looking forward to a successful year.

Clay Making In Green Seven: One of the best parts of our school is our amazing facilities. This past week, the students in Ms. Cowling’s classes got to take their art skills to the next level by using our clay wheels and our kiln. Students got creative in making a variety of different clay models and then fired them in our kiln. The final products turned out amazing.

Connecting With Nature: We have really enjoyed our OACES (Outdoor Aboriginal Community Environmental Studies) class and one of the biggest impacts it is having on our students is reconnecting them with the world around us. This past week, Ms Villeneuve and the students capitalized on our local creek and the fact that salmon are spawning. Students learned about the process, but more importantly to respect our local environment.

Making Music At HDSMS: We are so excited to have band back at HDSMS. Mrs Mills and the students have been working so hard over the past few weeks and it is paying off. This past week, we popped in to hear how things were going and it was GREAT! Students were playing in a cooperative way and sounded wonderful. Students are preparing for their first playing test next week.

Christmas Crafts With ACCESS: Our grade 7 classes with Ms Passaglia and Ms Ashcroft have committed this month to the “12 Days Of Kindness.” The students are coming up with ways to make HD Stafford a better place to be by doing nice things around the school. This past week, they created an awesome opportunity for our ACCESS students by designing and implementing Christmas Crafts. They had a variety of different stations and it was amazing to see the smiles on all the kids faces as together, they enjoyed the afternoon.
