Hawk Squawk: December 4th

December 4, 2015

What an AWESOME week!!! So much powerful learning in all our classes as student begin their second term at HD Stafford Middle School. Here is our Hawk Squawk: December 4th. Please be sure to share with your family and friends.

  1. Grade Eights Create Smoking Pig: The students in our grade 8 classes got a IMG_6422
first hand look at the effects of smoking on our lungs during their Science class today. Ms Welsh brought in a pig’s lung and then created a contraption to re-create a pig smoking 3 packs of cigarettes. And almost instantly students could see the impact of the nicotine and tar on the lungs. They then dissected the lungs to further investigate. It is hard to imagine any of them even IMG_6423thinking of taking up smoking after seeing this amazing demonstration.
  2. IMG_3793Students of 212 Hit The Lanes: The amazing students in our 212 program have been working hard towards their own individual and class goals and this past week were rewarded. They enjoyed glow bowling and chilli dogs at a local alley all while bonding as a class. Huge thanks to Ms Janzen and “Campfire Cluster” for all their supportIMG_3792 of this amazing program.
  3. IMG_6428Grade Sixes Weave Their Way To Learning: The students in Ms Saumier, Ms Zawaduk and Ms Cooper’s classes are currently studying the popular novel, The Cay. As to help make a personal, hands-on connection to the book, they learned how to weave a variety of materials to create a variety of different things. It is great when we can bring literature alive and connect it to other skills and IMG_0139-1passions.
  4. Nights Alive At HD Stafford Middle: At HD Stafford Middle school, one of they keys to our success for students is a strong connection to community partners. IMG_6362We are happy to have the Nights Alive back again this year. Every Tuesday this group invites HDSMS students to the school at 6pm to engage in skill building, fun, leadership activities. Organized through the community and led by LSS students, it really demonstrates the power of connections and giving back. The program runs on a drop in basis and is free so please don’t hesitate to come by. Huge thanks to Tim Gonzales for organizing this great opportunity.
  5. Quilting In Home Arts: Mrs Sanderson’s classes were treated to special guestsIMG_6333 this past week who came to show them a few different skills in the Home Arts area. The group from Tomorrow’s Quilters came in and shared their passion and talent for this creative art with your students, creating a variety of IMG_6335prints. A huge thank you to all the retired principals and teachers who are in this organization and to Mrs Sanderson for organizing this awesome learning opportunity.
